Aerial cars, nuclear fission, Betamax video – sometimes I wonder if augmented reality can really live up to the expectations its name conjures.
However, recent developments are slowly proving that augmented reality can be a major technology development in our daily lives – not the least in the area of education. For example, three dimensional tracking – an AR application that gives 3D, step-by-step instructions via a mobile phone browser – could help with everything from building my new IKEA furniture to giving medical students instructions during first-time surgery. There are also possibilities for field personnel like construction site workers, first responders and technicians.
And as much as I like talking album covers, wallpaper samplers or the new AR app from the Black-Eyed Peas, 3D tracking is one application that could make augmented reality a real necessity in my life.
